1 "''''"So, if you care about 8 bits at all, get in touch and lets try and keep the Spectrum alive, andtry and bring back some of the dead, like the C16, +4, VIC 20, BBC, ELECTRON, AMSTRAD 464,664, ALL SPECTRUMS, ZX80, ZX81, DRAGON 32 & 64, TANDY, SHARP, ATARI and all those other computers which you stuck in your cupboards, never to see daylight again!":
1 "''''"Although I hope there will be offers to freely contribute, runand produce the publication (editorial team, wordprocessing,DTP, art etc.) funds may be needed to pay for duplication and distribution. Similarly, there are ideas to produce jointgroup products, like booklets, guides to M/C, adventure playingand packaging for new software also designed by members.":
1 "''''"All the aims and ideas are not yet fully implemented. Like ZAT,we hope the group is interactiveand that you (and fellow users) can offer advice, help comment or criticism within the next month or so, so that when the Association is officially set upit will have full backing by themajority and be fair in it's running and aims to ensure the continued survival of 8-bit computers past and present.":
1 "'''"The Ads are well presented, although a little brief in some parts, but that could be the fault of the advertiser in question. I liked the 'Dark Secrets' section which aims to reveal some juicy secrets and cheats in games. I'd like to seesome tips on loading some PAWed adventures into PAW to hack it apart! But, as this is a tips & help 'zine, would not benefit. So, overall, what do I think?":
1 "'''"So, summing up, for `1.50, this fanzine is value for money, and in my opinion, has an advantage over its closest 'competitor', ~What Now?~, in the way it's notall written by one person, and the way it has more 'freedom' to print certain things comparedto the restrictions of a tapezine, and can be easily put down and picked up again, compared to having to reload a 'zine in. (I'd better shut up now as it's not doing me any favours!)":
1 "'''"Let me just say, If you're goingto run a PD library, or already do, just remember of the responsibility you must upkeep, and the costs. As for registration, there will soon bea parliament bill making it LAW to register a PD library like a legal company. If you run a shoddy service, you WILL be fined under the usual laws whichcover shops & businesses. Take note!":
1 "'''"If YOU want to advertise totallyfree, drop me a line at the usual address":
1 "'''"I don't like to toot my horn, but in my opinion, the best PD library in this Solar System! A good couple of hundred good quality, value for money titles, all checked and duplicated by loading in, running and then saving to tape. Prices are only25p per item, or 10 for `2. Orders are prepared and sent outwithin
1 "'''"As I mentioned briefly in P136, I'm trying to revive your dead printers! Obviously the print quality of screen$ depends on your screen pictures, but the utilties I'm presenting allow you to make good shaded copies for more depth, and various sized text print routines. If you want to see what an Alphacomcan achieve, send 50p for a copyof my local Mini Club News to myaddress and include an SAE to carry the A4 mag back to you.":
1 "'''"Any comments can be sent to the following address and if possible, send an SAE for a quicker reply. 1 "''"Well, if you remember my soapboxfrom last issue about PD libraries, I can proudly reporrton the demise of two sub- standard ones. These are Rasputin & Propac. Both of themcharged high prices and long waiting times. The tape I was sent from Rasputin was one of those Yakohuma tapes found in packs of 10 for 30p on market stalls! As for Propac, you're all well aware about my two tapes they never returned and the ripped up cheque with NO reason why...":
1 "''"Want to play that classic game? Like to playtest before buying? Want to review a new game for your 'zine? Then look no furtherbecause this library has many hundreds of titles, all at low prices and include first class postage."''"
1 "''"This is a very good 'zine. Alec has taken the presentation as far as he can with PAW and maybeshould consider some other meansThe order of the mag needs sorting out a little (Index of games, tips, star tip, ads, backissues, odds & ends, next ish), and it would be nice to have a logo at the top of the menu, andmaybe a print command to dump the screens (I used the Multi- face COPY command), and a betterinlay (which I will be happy to design: contact me). The Doc Dark Experiece is missing and needs to come back!":
1 "''"There is no shortage of tips in this magazine, and some letter about a +2 PAW compressor which didn't seem to make much sense to me. There is also a small letters page and a tiny classified piece tucked into a corner."'"The tips and requests are scattered throughout the magazine and may possibly be better all in one section (or maybe not!), and there is an article on contributions needed in exchange for a free solution from the library.":
1 "''"There are several ways funding can be obtained. The most obvious is a reasonable memebr- ship fee to join the Associationfor a minimum of one year for groups and individuals in the UKand abroad. In the case o the 'show stand', voluntary funding could be suggested. Members could donate a percentage of sales to the float or products like the fanzine could have a cover price to sell to non- members, subscription rates etc.Free membership ISN'T ruled out but if it is adopted, it may limit the aims to the Association.":
1 "''"The print quality in my review copy wasn't very good, but it was readable and well written. I wasn't keen on the front coverbut nethertheless, it was still better than others, and the 'zine still has to establish itself. The editor states that he's investing in a printer, which will no doubt uprate the quality several fold."'"The quantity of the 'zine is very good. Anyone can boast theyhave over 40 pages in their mag,but if half of it is blank, it'srubbish, but *Spell* is jam packed.":
1 "''"The magazine price isn't anything to do with me, thats club business to deal with costsof paper & printing."' "As for the utilties, one or two are from the PD library, but thenew Fontasia program is great! It took me about a day to strip the program down, add new fonts, and neaten up the presentation and add a new COPY routine. The new program eliminates the old loader and
1 "''"The length of the Hobbit review did not give this excellent gameenough justice, and only touchedon the revolutionary 'random activity' movement and didn't once mention ~INGLISH~, the system Melbourne House invented which altered adventure game design still used to this day. Anyway, back to the magazine, there is a large solution library where you can buy soltions for a very reasonable 10p, and maps for a modest 20p. *Spell* also has a solution of the month printed, and two others.":
1 "''"That was a letter sent to me by the co-ordinators to publicise the group through AlchNews. If you would like to support this group, which will be an astounding success, or would like to contribute your services in any way, or promote your projects more, then get in touch. As was stated, people areneeded to help produce the newsletter, and even though the co-ordinators are more than capable of accomplishing this task, it would give them more time to run the group, and give other members the chance, getting more people involved.":
1 "''"Take the newly established ZAT related 8 bit appreciation society (See P110 for main article). This is being run by mature, technical, knowledgable people with an established, quality related name, with the knowhow and DTP equipment to cope with this. Groups HAVE to be reliable, and if they promisesomethng, they should FULFIL IT!If they promise a date, they should STICK TO IT! It's a full time task, and should be treatedas so!":

1 "''"Phew, what a month (again)! As usual, I've been putting off A.N 8, but once I start, I enjoy it. I've had an extra large workload this last couple of months. First, theres research and compiling this, thenew PD list, lots of new PD to be sorted (and in French!), reviewing the latest ~What Now~,and Spellunkler, helping out Spell, the usual PD orders & enquiries, my ZAT columns and now I'm on the committee of a local Mini Owner's club and I'm doing the newsletter!":

1 "''"Now, as a special offer only forAlchNews readers, I'm compiling a special PD tape full of print utilties. These include full 192 line COPY routines, inverse, shaded and poster print routinesand a rewritten FONTASIA programfrom the PD library. I use all the above for compiling the MiniClub magazine, and could easily put AlchNews on paper! I'll alsothrow in a BOLD font like this so you can list programs with better clarity.":
1 "''"Next issue, we will have a largeadventure tips section and more news on the new user group and the usual sections, comments andmuch more. Next issue, I will give away a free PD title of your choice, because I'm in such a good mood, so when you order AN9, state which program you want!"''"
1 "''"Neon Grafix specialise in demos, especially for the 128, but has recently taken over the badly run Rasputin PD Library. Good luck to him! I was recently shocked to see Darren had rippedoff the AlchNews program shell to make a PD review program without asking. He hadn't even formatted the bottom option bar neatly when he ripped out my COPYRIGHT message!"''"
   1 "''"More name checks..."'"
1 "''"Look at it this way: You've juststarted a very small fire and the wind is blowing against it, and there are half a dozen people standing around chucking great piles of logs on it. Surely you let just one person control the fire and slowly nurture it until it grows stonger, then you can all throw your logs on! Do you see the link between this and the Spectrum? I'm all for User Groups, but do we want to be plagued with lots of sub- standard ones?":
1 "''"Loads more tips next time!":
1 "''"Last issue you will remember I reviewed this, but Alec carswell(the editor) decided to rename it issue 0: a taster of things to expect, as being the first issue, didn't contain much reader material. This also caused confusion as my adventurecolumnist was told it was PD, and I was told it wasn't. To clear up this tangle, it is NOT PD, so if you have a copy, do not distribute it. I'm unsure ofIssue 0's cost, but doubt it will be full price, as it simplywon't be worth it.":
1 "''"Last issue you will probably remember the major review of Spellunker 1. Well, now, issue 3has just arrived, and in the nick of time may I ask, because if it had been one day later, there would have been adventure tips & solutions here!"'" So, what is it like? Well, it'sstill in the same sideways 'A5' format whic makes it a little 'wobbly' when handling, but in my opinion, a better read. The cover was 'different', featuringonly a small title and a nice drawing of Gordo Greatbelly and a rather strange foot!":
1 "''"Just enough memory to say thankyou for sending off for AlchNews, and I hope to see you again in issue 9, which will be out in September. The next majorPD update will be in December, but I'll inform regular shopperswhen you buy your PD."''"
1 "''"It wouldn't be so bad, but I don't get paid for ANY of it! I don't mind, because my work is doing someone some good some-where! It's also been a bad month for my computers; First, Ihad an extension put on my printer cable, but it's shortingsomewhere, and I've had a new Z80 put in my ~+~ (See P130) butthere's no power going into it! One good thing though: Thanks toJoyce Cook of SSH (See P150), Iv'e got an external tape on the+2 (See P130). Thanx Joyce!":
1 "''"Isn't it funny; first theres nothing much happening, then one set of established people decide to start up a user group, then other people appear and saythat they're going to start one up, and othr user groups which have been around for ages try and grab a piece of the proverbial limelight. What the next artcle is about is the sameas the PD libraries Soapbox fromlast issue, but about User Groups...":

1 "''"In order to comply with EEC ruling 20383B (Sec 2 Para G) I've included a simple command which allows you to press just ENTER to go to the next page, rather than ~N~. By using the IN command, Shift ENTER can evenbe used to go back a page, but I'll leave that to you! The ENTER key reader is at line 2055so Shift ENTER can be at 2056."''"
1 "''"If you're interested in adventures in any way, I'd recommend this over ~What Now?~ as this succeeds in quantity andquality in every section. My copy came with a free map of 'Behold Atlantis' which is some-thing else which cannot be done on a tapezine. Subscriptions area very reasonable `8 per year, which shows common sense in the editor so give a special offer, and adverts, scare though they are, are a reasonable `3 per page or `1.50 for half a page. I know I'll take out an 'ad' formy PD.":
1 "''"If you are still using the internal drive, solder a wire from the new socket or lead to the location where the BLACK wire is soldered to the PCB board of the tape unit. Now do the same for the tip of the lead or SIGNAL part of your new socket and connect it to the WHITE position in the plug or onthe PCB. That's it!"'"As for the +2 monitor socket to a video in, I haven't found the right size capacitor/resistor yet, but will tell you when I find out.":
1 "''"I'd definetly suggest *Spell* for all adventurers, and it is the first and only 'zine to recieve my seal of approval to be featured in the PD Library newspage. (Very tough selection committee there!). Granted, the text quality may not be 100%, but it is only their 3rd issue, and already better than other 'zines on the market, and don't forget it is virtually impossible to get high quality print from a homegrown company. Conratulation to all at *Spell* for a great 'zine, which will nodoubt be a strong force in months to come!":
1 "''"First of all, is your internal tape deck totalled? If it is, it would be best to disconnect it altogether, and then, like me, you will probably get a better radio reception if you use a +2 near a radio tuned to aweak station. If you are disconnecting permanently, you will have to rewire the ON lightas well. You can get the PCB connector plug from a good electrical shop. Wire the GROUND of the socket or lead foryour external tape to the pin where the BLACK wire went...":
1 "''"During the last few months, fellow 8 bit users and I have been contacting other users concerning the creation of a 'group' to ensure the continued survival of the 8 bit computer scene, which has been in an alarming state of decline for the last few years. At the recetALL FORMATS FAIR, we agreed thatthe 'group' is called the above title and will cover all 8 bits equally, including ZX80, Oric, Dragon, C16 etc. Although I havebeen apointed as acting co- ordinator we will need helper tocover each section and help the group's aims as proposed.":
1 "''"During Loading we are greeted with Alec's disclaimer and copy-right which was used during Adventure Link. W.N. doesn't usually get close to the bone about subjects, but I's best to put in a
1 "''"Do you have a Multiface which you know works but doesn't work on an old 48k or 128? If so, then your problem could be a faulty Z80 chip. As most of youwho follow AlchNews will know, Ihad some probs with my +2 a few months ago, but rectified it with a new Z80 chip. Now the same applies to any Spectrum. But, you will have to probably add a chip socket first. Apparently, it's something to dowith a burnt out NMI line on theZ80, lost through either bad connections, or bad hardware, ornot switching off the computer when removing hardware.":
1 "''"As the Spectrum is in such a delicate position, it should be noted that trying to cash in on a dying machine it ridiculous and will only kill it more. This is one reason why AlchNews is free. I'll admit, it is timeconsuming, but if people enjoy my work, then that is my pay. If you want to make money on cheap rubbish, buy an Amiga. Your computer isn't a $inclair $pectrum 128`!":
1 "''"As if they didn't have enough todo, they send me adventure tips for AlchNews too!"''"
1 "''"Anyway, after this you are greeted with with the main menu, which features no less that 14 sections, but a few of them could count as one: All the different tips menus for exampleand could be better organised. The tips are set out extremely well and Alec makes good use of colour an text formatting to make the pages a pleasure to read. The letters page is also good, with informal, and sometimes witty comments from Alec.":
1 "''"Anyone who used to read the regular Speccy rags would have no doubt seen the pleas for an external +2 tape socket. Well, I tried the replies twice from two DIFFERENT mags and to me, (and Joyce Cook), they were BOTHWRONG! So now, I can reveal theproper way to go about it...":

Surely (and I put this point to Alec personally) it would be wiser and much less time consuming to put all his talents into one big'zine, as you can't over emphasize the quality/quantity ratio. Granted, theres nothing wrong with diversfying but another adventure tapezine is milking it a bit much, and thinnng the 'blood' of Carswell Enterprises (I like that title!)The back issues are all set at `1.50, and there is no saving or special offer connected with subscription.":
1 "'"Those of you with an old Alphacom or floyd or ZX Printer, then dig it out, because it's time to revitalise it!"'"Regular readers will know about the trick of using fax paper which is cheap and very good quality. I recently bought a 30 metre roll (which, when cut, will double it to 60M) for only `1.59+VAT. How many metres do you get on a normal roll? Not asmany as 60 for that smll price, I'll bet! Cutting it tedious, unless you have a sharp guillotine. I usually unroll 3 metres and then fold it in half and slice with a scalpel or plastic ruler.":
1 "'"The use of various fonts is goodbut I'd limit it to 2 fonts at the most and save memory, all you need is a clear, near font (like this!). The tape quality is very good, but a little long.Cost is a vital issue, but if Alec recieved more input, and shorter tapes were used (no worry of stretch'n'snap), it would be more value for money, but if adventures are your life, and like to collect lots of tipsthen `1.50 will be like a good buy to you. To appeal to a widermarket, Alec needs to add more features, but if he's aiming at bewildered & Intermediate gamersthen he's hit the bullseye!":
1 "'"The aims which will require funding include the possibility of a regular stand at computer shows, like the All Formats, which has venues all over the UK. All 'founder members' regularly attend the Birmingham show where stands cost around `40. ZAT offers independent 'zines the chance to share theirstand for `5, especially if you cannot attend the show. Members of the group could do similarat shows all over the UK and act as'agents' for members who can't attend. Another objective is to produce an Association newsleterto cover all 8 bits and member'sactivites.":
1 "'"The aims fall into two areas; services which key members can provide 'free' to other group members or to the general user; services which require 'funding'to be initiated in the shortest time possible. Among the free services are: encouragemnet & advice in creation of new products, PD Demo writers, artists, musicians etc.; A data-base to pool useful info & contacts; possibe discounts on member products to other membersand to specific readership of member fanzines and other 8 bit groups and a 'news agency' to pass on info to the general membership etc.":

The Ed's comments are good and the quality of this reflects thequality of the magazine in my opinion. There is a large reviewof the GI Games collection Vol 1and four more recent reviews. There is an archive section, featuring reviews of classics like Hobbit, Shadows of Mordor, RedHawk, The Big Sleeze and manymore. One thing which upset me was the slight inaccuracies of the Hobbit review. First of all was the naming ~Bulbo~ and not ~Bilbo~ and also his nephew, notgrandchild Frodo, not ~Theodo~.":
